Assessments
Guided Reading Books/Groups

Below Level
Language Support
Daily Routines
Phonics, Spelling, Grammar, and Writing instruction

Program Objective:
The main objective of this training is to raise the teachers comfort level when using Houghton Mifflin Reading Series in the classroom. Following the training, the teachers will:
-have a deeper knowledge of each component of HM.
-understand how each component works together.
-be able to work together to create consistency among their grade level.

Learning Activities:
The trainers devise a mini-lesson that can show how most of the pieces work together. Example: Teach a day of the Reading Lessons including the Key Vocabulary, Phonics, Spelling, etc. Afterwords, the trainer will demonstrate how the lesson plan should look for that day.

The trainer will have every single piece of the series in front of the room. They will show each piece and describe how to use it. The Phonics component will be shown through a photostory. It will display each piece and describe how it is used (see storyboard for details). Trainer will go through the process of showing the teachers how to pull from component of Houghton Mifflin to meet all of the district's curriculum needs.
Teachers will break off into groups of two's and develop a week's worth of lessons using the Daily Lesson Plan guide in the Teacher's Manual. Each group will share and compare what they have developed. The trainers will show what an ideal week should look like.
The Trainers will offer feedback on each groups plans and how they can be changed.

Media Requirements:
The trainers will need each piece of the HM reading series. The phonics component will be displayed and demontrated using PhotoStory. In order to do this, the trainers will need a computer, data projector, and screen. Also, their presentation will be done using Microsoft Power Point. The PhotoStory will be incorporated into that.

Questions and Answers:
How do see these pieces fitting into what you already do?
What is the best way to begin to plan?
How do these pieces relate to each other?
What are the most useful pieces needed to teach the district's curriculum?

Trainee Evaluation:
For this training, a teacher survey would be done to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. The teacher's comfort level will need to increase in order for this training to be considered successful. The teachers will also be able to discuss each component with each other as well be able to plan for future lessons. You will be able to observe the success of time. Teachers will become more consistent with each other.

Follow Up:
After this training, the teachers will be given the opportunity to work with the curriculum director to develop a document that help the teachers to gain consistency among grade level as well as between the grade levels. This will be their opportunity to lay out exactly what NEEDS to be taught versus what can be taught as optional. Going into this, the teachers will need to be successful in the training. If not, it will be difficult to develop the program based on what the district needs.
